I have always loved to travel. It was no coincidence that I focused my dissertation research on the tourism sector of small islands. I understand that it isn't the most sustainable sector itself, but if well-managed, tourism holds great potential for single-base island economies. It can be a strong precursor for local economic growth and employment. The sector, due to their dependence on natural resources such as beaches and coral reefs, can also provide incentives for protecting and conserving these resources. In that sense, it has the potential to contribute to a destination's social, economic, and environmental pillars of sustainable development.
During the four years of Ph.D., my goal has been to travel to at least one new country every year. I traveled across continents from Asia to South America. The more outside of my comfort zone, the better! I am not too confident about traveling this year due to the looming pandemic. But I am glad that I have managed to achieve my goal so far.
